Reunion

Keeping in Contact

Lions Youth Brass can be found as a club on the website Friends Reunited.

Celebrating the past to the present.

Saturday the 15th May 2004 Lions Youth Brass celebrated its 15th anniversary with a reception and concert featuring all of the current Lions bands as well as a special reunion band made up of past players and long serving current members.

The day began at 2:30 when the reunion began to assemble for the rehearsal, the program was made up of pieces that most of the past members will have played during their time at Lions, many of them hold special memories of the numerous tours the band has been on. The band also played a march especially written for them by me, the piece entitled 'Reunion' was written for Lions and premiered at the begining of the Reunion bands set, an honour to have had a piece performed at such an occasion. The memories came flooding back as the mixture of lions generations suddenly remembered so many pieces.

At 4:30 members of the current Lions bands, other past members no longer playing, past conductors and supporters joined together for a buffet. Many enjoyed browsing through the numerous photo albums, newspaper clippings and videos as well as sharing stories and memories with friends who have not met in many years. It fell to Nigel to toast to another 15 years of this remarkable occasion.

We were fortunate enough to have been able to engage Ian Porthouse as guest soloist, one of the uk's leading cornet players. He had been to a youth band rehearsal in the week and proved to be a great help to the members not only as a soloist but by conducting some of the rehearsal. He rehearsed with the reunion band at 6:15 and proved to be a fantastic soloist, not only on cornet but also flugel and posthorn.

The concert began at 7:30, to a packed hall who thouroughly enjoyed the evening. The youth band chose to play some current favourites as well as Jubilation, the test piece many past members will remember winning the national championship with in the mid 90's. There were appearances by both the begginer band and junior band proving that there are many more generations to come in the Lions Youth Brass story. The evening was suberbly compered by Neil Barnett, a parent and friend of the band for many years. The end of the evening saw the Reunion band joined by the youth band on stage for 'Carnival de Paris' and Lions' all time traditional finisher, 'the can can''. It was great fun and left the audience shouting for more.

A brilliant day, hopefully not 15 years before another reunion is planned
