Perfomance Biography

Ian Raisbeck studied Trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior School and Birmingham Conservatoire graduating with a BMus (Hons) degree in 2006. During this time Ian was winner of the Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Prize and the Bernard Brown brass ensemble prize, he was also a finalist in the prestigious Ludlow Philharmonic Concerto Prize and the Doris Newton Music Club Prize.

Ian has performed with variety of groups such as: The English Festival Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English Pro Musica Brass Ensemble, Three Cities Orchestra, Queens Park Sinfonia, Central England Ensemble and many freelance orchestras. In 2003 Ian formed Centenary Brass Quintet; now an award winning group formed by graduates of Birmingham Conservatoire. Ian has also played Cornet and Soprano Cornet with many of the country’s leading Brass Bands and in 2008 was appointed Assistant Principal Cornet with the famous Wingates Band.

As a soloist Ian performs in regular recital series’ and often appears as guest soloist with bands at home and on tour. So far Ian has performed on 24 European and 2 USA tours to date. He has appeared as Concerto soloist and recorded many times both live and in the studio. Ian receives many bookings every year from all over the UK as ‘The Wedding Trumpeter’.

Ian has taught for the Birmingham Music Service, where he was a key member of staff in developing wider opportunities, the Derbyshire Music Partnership and now for ‘Music for Life’ in Cheshire as well as running a busy private teaching practice. Since 2003 he has held the position ‘Composer-in-Residence’ with the Lions Youth Brass who have recorded and performed his original compositions and arrangements.

When he has time off he enjoys fell walking and sports; recently completing Wainright’s 194 mile Coast to Coast Walk with Katie, who he married in summer 2008.

Teaching Biography

Ian Raisbeck studied Trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior School and Birmingham Conservatoire graduating with a BMus (Hons) degree in 2006. During this time Ian was winner of the Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Prize and the Bernard Brown brass ensemble prize, he was also a finalist in the prestigious Ludlow Philharmonic Concerto Prize and the Doris Newton Music Club Prize.

He began teaching in 2004 for the Birmingham Music Service working in a variety of schools as a Brass Peripatetic teacher and upper brass tutor for the Birmingham Schools Brass Band. Since then Ian has worked with the Derbyshire Music Partnership as well as with many private pupils of varying ability. He has also worked with children suffering learning difficulties through his work in Selly Oak special school.

Since 2004 Ian has received much positive feedback from headteachers, parents and senior music service staff. He has had a positive effect on every school many of which have increased contact time since Ian began working with them.

Ian has taught Wider Opportunities to a class of 35 since September 2007 alongside another teacher. This has been a big success with all pupils maintaining good progress and excellent behaviour. This project was selected as the example for headteachers across Birmingham to observe with view to starting similar projects in their own schools.

In 2008 Ian took up new appointments in Cheshire with 'Music for Life' and as a private peripatetic teacher.

Ian has taken a keen interest in ensembles and has worked as conductor / tutor with the Birmingham Schools Brass Band, Birmingham Schools Training Wind Orchestra and Colmers Farm area Wind Band. This has seen Ian develop good leadership and conducting skills. In 2007 he was a key staff member in the planning and staffing of a tour of central Europe involving a Brass Band and Wind Band consisting of 70 children.

In 2003 Ian was appointed composer in residence for the Lions Youth Brass who have recorded and performed his original compositions and arrangements. In addition to this he has also developed many of his own teaching resources and continues to explore new ways writing from young people of all abilities.

Ian has performed in and led workshops in many schools through his work with Centenary Brass, a quintet formed and managed by Ian since 2003, and with the company Music Mites based in Milton Keynes.

When he has time off Ian enjoys sports and fell walking and photography; recently completing Wainright’s 194 mile Coast to Coast Walk with Katie, who he married in summer 2008.
